Not sure if this was the right thing to do, D stepped into the dim room. Just a tiny slit in the blinds allowed for some of the late October light inside. A huddled figure lay on the bed, covered from head to toe. The room seemed stark naked, with only a dresser on the long side of the wall.
“Ash? It’s D. I’d like to meet you.”
Josh pulled the door closed behind him. Fuck. What should he say now?
“Is it okay that I’m here?”
“Do as you wish, it doesn’t matter to me” came the muffled reply from the bed.
Ah, at least he was talking to him. D took a couple steps more until he stood closer.
“Actually, it matters to me. Josh invited me to meet you. Our last encounter wasn’t a happy one, and I wanted to see how you’re doing.”
“I’m fine. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Sorry, but I’d say hiding under the sheets is not fine. And I haven’t met you. I’ve talked to the back of your head, hidden by said sheets, and your hair. I’d like to see your face.”
“I’m sorry. It was rude of me. Please, I apologize.” Ash turned around and sat up, the sheet pooling in his lap. He wore a huge sweatshirt, and his hair stood in every direction. Black stubble covered his cheeks. Tired, huge black eyes stared at D. The expression of defeat was unmistakable on his face. But why? Because he asked for him to turn around?
“Can I do anything for you, Sir? I’m all yours as you please, Sir.”
Wait, what? D’s mind raced. What the fuck did Ash want?
Well, I guess I was at a disadvantage to have not read the previous books in the series but as always hindsight is 20/20. If you're a fan of this series, I'm sure you will probably enjoy this book quite a bit. If you are new to this series or this book particularly, I think you might enjoy it much more if you start at the beginning of the series.
I found Ash's story pretty sad in the beginning and hated learning of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his Master. Unfortunately, though, it was very confusing to me because in their world mates are not how I think of mates. There is a big hypocrisy with the entire thing because it is perfectly okay and legal for the Dominant mate to treat the submissive mate anyway they see fit. Abuse is the Dominant's right, something I find disgusting. I think of Mates as soulmates and perfect together.
D was sweet and his concern for Ash was nice. It was a bit rushed as far as their attraction and/or love but after what they had suffered, it was nice to see Ash healing and learning that love does actually exist for him. They were able to form a friendship that evolved into a relationship that was actually happy and healthy.
There were a few twists and surprises and dynamics changes which was different. Ash definitely goes through a period of self-discovery which he hadn't previously had the opportunity for. With help from D, though, he learns his true potential. It was entertaining to see how the men handle this and the picture the author painted for us was quite vivid.
Overall, I can say that this was an okay read but I didn't love it.
